For additional purchases made within the next fifteen minutes, you don't have to enter your password again.

See the status of downloading songs and albums:

Tap Downloads.

To pause a download, tap .

If you need to turn off the device or leave the area of your Wi-Fi connection, don't worry about interrupting the download. The device starts the download again the next time it joins a Wi-Fi network with an Internet connection. Or if you open iTunes on your computer, iTunes completes the download to your iTunes library.

Purchased songs are added to a Purchased playlist on iPod touch or iPhone. If you delete the Purchased playlist, iTunes creates a new one when you buy an item from the iTunes Wi- Fi Music Store.

For information on syncing purchases to your computer and verifying downloads, see the iPod touch Features Guide or the iPhone User's Guide.

iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store Troubleshooting:

You can visit the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store from your iPod touch or iPhone. If you are having issues with the iTunes Wi-Fi Store, you may consider trying these steps.

Make sure you are connected to a Wi-Fi network

If you are having trouble connecting to the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store make sure you are connected to a Wi-Fi network. For help with getting connected, check the iPod touch Features Guide and this document.

Note: If you own an iPhone, you can connect to the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store over the cellular data network, but only for streaming and downloading podcasts.

Managing your downloads:

To see the status of downloading songs and albums, tap Downloads. You can then pause a download by tapping pause button.

If you need to turn off iPod touch or iPhone or leave the area of your Wi-Fi connection, don't worry about interrupting the download. iPod touch or iPhone starts the download again the next time iPod touch or iPhone joins a Wi-Fi network with an Internet connection. Or if you open iTunes on your computer, iTunes completes the download to your iTunes library.

Finding your purchased content
Purchased songs are added to a Purchased playlist on iPod touch or iPhone. If you delete the Purchased playlist, iTunes creates a new one when you buy an item from the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store.

iTunes automatically syncs songs and albums you've purchased from the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store back to your computer the next time you sync. This lets you listen to the purchases on your computer and provides a backup if you delete purchases from iPod touch or iPhone. The songs are synced to the "Purchased on (iPod/iPhone name)" playlist on your computer. iTunes creates the playlist if it doesn't exist. This playlist allows you to keep track of any purchases you've made on the go.

iTunes also syncs any purchases you made on the go to the Purchased playlist on your computer. Using the Purchased playlist, you can keep track of any purchases you've made on the go or on your computer all in one place.

You can use iTunes to verify that all the music, videos, and other items you bought from the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store are in your iTunes library. You might want to do this if a download was interrupted.

Here's how:

Make sure your computer is connected to the Internet.

In iTunes 8, choose Store > Check for Available Downloads or, in iTunes 7, choose Store > Check for Purchases.

Enter your iTunes Store account ID and password, then click Check.

Purchases not yet on your computer will be downloaded.

If some of the songs downloaded on the iPod touch or iPhone and some downloaded on the computer, see this document for steps to transfer purchased content to the computer. Then you can sync to transfer the content downloaded on the computer back to your iPhone or iPod touch.

The Purchased playlist displays all your purchases. However, because you can add or remove items in this list, it might not be accurate. To see all your purchases, click iTunes Store, click Account, log in, and then click Purchase History.

A few things to keep in mind:

Some albums include bonus content, which is downloaded to your iTunes library on your computer. Not all bonus content is downloaded directly to iPod touch or iPhone.
While Parental Controls are not synced to your iPod touch or iPhone, songs and albums on the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store will be marked as either Clean or Explicit. When purchasing music, take care that you are purchasing the correct version of the song or album.

Additional Information:

For information about downloading podcasts from the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store, click here.

Changing the signed-in iTunes Store account:

When you sync your iPhone or iPod touch with your computer, the account last used to access the iTunes Store from the computer is synced to the mobile device for use in the iTunes Store from the device as well. This same account is used for the App Store as well. This account will be used on the device for both stores until you sign in from your computer to the iTunes Store with a different account, and then resync your mobile device with the computer.

When you sync your iPhone or iPod touch, the iTunes application on the computer will share its current iTunes Store account ID with the device you are syncing. This account ID will be used to make purchases from the iTunes Store and App Store on the mobile device.

The account ID that was synced to the device is displayed at the bottom of each page of the iTunes Store, so you'll always know what account you are using on the device. Simply open iTunes on your mobile device and scroll to the bottom of any page to see which account is currently in use.

Changing Your Account:

It is not possible to change the account in use on the device itself or to sync multiple accounts to your mobile device. To change the account you are using on your mobile device, go to your computer and sign in to the iTunes Store with the account you want to use on your mobile device, then sync your iPhone or iPod touch with your computer again. This will transfer the new account information to the mobile device. To sign in or out of an account in iTunes choose Store > Sign In (or Sign Out).

Editing Your Account Information:

It is not possible to change your account information from your mobile device. You can view and change your iTunes Store account information using iTunes on your computer by choosing Store > View My Account.

Changing Your iTunes Store Country:

It is not possible to change the iTunes Store country in use on the device itself. To change this on your mobile device, go to iTunes on your computer, change the iTunes Store to the country you want to use on your mobile device, then sync your iPhone or iPod touch with your computer again. To quickly change to the correct country for your account, choose Store > Sign In. If you are not using the correct iTunes Store country for your account you may see an error message advising that your account is only valid for purchases in the iTunes Store for your country when you try to download from the iTunes Store or App Store on your mobile device.

How to connect to the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store at Starbucks:

When you enter a participating Starbucks with an iPod touch, an iPhone, or a computer running the latest version of iTunes, you can access the iTunes Store and the Starbucks Now Playing content. To see if iTunes has arrived at your Starbucks, consult our list of participating Starbucks locations.

Connecting with an iPhone or iPod touch:

Before attempting to connect to the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store, be sure that the iPhone or iPod touch software is up to date. Learn how to update your iPhone or iPod touch software.

You will also need to sync your iPhone or iPod touch with a computer that has an iTunes Store account set up in iTunes. Doing so will sync your iTunes Store account to your iPhone or iPod touch. All subsequent purchases you make with this device via the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store will be charged to this iTunes Store account.

When you are in a participating Starbucks, select tmobile from the list of Wi-Fi networks on your iPhone or iPod touch. To find the list of Wi-Fi networks, tap Settings and then tap Wi-Fi. Then, on the Wi-Fi Networks screen, tap tmobile to join the network.

Once you have joined the T-Mobile network, you can connect to the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store. Press the Home button to return to the Home screen and then tap iTunes. You are now connected to the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store and will be able to buy and download music. You can read up on how to browse and use the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store here.

To access the Starbucks Now Playing content, simply tap the Starbucks icon. Genius makes playlists from songs in your iTunes library that go great together. You can use these playlists in iTunes as well as sync them to iPhone and compatible iPod models.
To learn more about setting up Genius in iTunes, review the information below.

When using iTunes 8 for the first time, you will see the new Genius Sidebar on the right side of the iTunes window. In the Genius sidebar, click Turn on Genius to start the setup process. You can also start Genius setup by choosing Store > Turn on Genius in iTunes or by selecting a song from your library and pressing the Genius button at the bottom of the iTunes window.

When beginning Genius setup, you'll be asked to sign in with your Apple ID or create a new one and agree to the terms and conditions.* iTunes will then proceed to gather information about the contents of your library, send this information to Apple, and download Genius results.
The time to complete this process will vary depending on the size of library information and the amount of traffic on the iTunes Store. At any time during this process you can use iTunes to play music or other content.

To turn Genius off, simply choose Store > Turn Off Genius in iTunes.

Additional Information
*If Genius is unavailable, you can continue using iTunes and check Genius availability at any time by clicking the Genius button.

Understanding Genius for iPod and iPhone:

Genius is an exciting new feature for iPod, iPhone, and iTunes which makes playlists from songs in your iTunes library that go great together. Genius playlists saved in iTunes can be synced to any iPod or iPhone, however creating and editing Genius playlists is available on these devices:

iPod touch*
iPod touch (2nd generation)
iPhone*
iPhone 3G*
iPod nano (4th generation)
iPod classic (120 GB)

Before you can use Genius on your device, you must set up Genius in iTunes 8. To learn more about this process, see How to Setup Genius in iTunes.

* Requires iPhone 2.1 software.

Genius playlists in iTunes 8 are created with preset limits of 25, 50, 75, or 100 songs. When saved Genius playlists are synced to your iPod or iPhone, they will contain the same songs as were present in the iTunes playlist. Genius playlists that are created or refreshed directly on an iPod or iPhone, however, are automatically set to a 25 songs limit. If Genius playlists are created or refreshed on your device, the changes made will automatically sync to iTunes if the device is set to sync music automatically.

If you sync a portion of your iTunes library to iPod or iPhone, in some instances, you may be unable to create a Genius playlist with some songs using your device. You may see one of the following messages:

"This song does not have enough related songs to create a Genius Playlist"
"Genius is unavailable for the selected song"
If this happens, try making a Genius playlist with those songs on your computer. If you can make a Genius playlist in iTunes on your computer, then it is likely that there are not enough songs on your iPod or iPhone that go great with the desired songs. In this configuration, deleted messages will be moved to a different folder that isn't automatically purged after 30 days.

Connectivity:

Verify you have an active Internet connection using Wi-Fi. You can test the connection by using any Internet-based application on iPod touch including Safari, Stocks, Maps or Weather.

iPod touch will display the Wi-Fi icon if it has an active network connection.

If you don't see an active connection, or are unable to use any of the Internet-based applications, try these articles:

Tips when using Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi information and settings
What if I don't see the Mail, Stocks, Maps or Weather icons?

Mail Settings:

Check with your ISP to verify you have the correct email account settings. Some ISPs have special settings for using mail outside of your home network that are different from the settings that are used inside your home network.

An example of an outgoing mail server:
smtp.myisp.net

Example incoming mail servers:
pop.myisp.net or mail.myisp.net

Example user names:
username or username@myisp.net

Click here for advanced SSL and port settings.
For more information on email account setup, click here.

Setup on iPod touch:

Try setting up your email account on iPod touch instead of syncing it from your computer.

From the Home screen choose Settings > Mail > Accounts > Add Account.
Choose your email account type: Y! Changes you make to accounts settings are not synced to your computer, allowing you to configure email to work with iPhone and iPod touch without affecting email on your computer.

Account Settings:
The specific account settings that appear on iPhone and iPod touch depend on the type of account you have — POP or IMAP.

Note: Exchange email accounts must be configured for IMAP to work with iPhone and iPod touch.

Stop using an account

From the Home screen choose Settings > Mail, choose an account, then turn Account off.

If an account is off, iPhone and iPod touch don't display the account, or send or check email from that account, until you turn it back on.

Adjust advanced settings
From the Home screen choose Settings > Mail > Accounts, choose an account, then do one of the following:

To set whether drafts, sent messages, and deleted messages are stored on iPhone and iPod touch or remotely on your email server (IMAP accounts only), tap Advanced and choose Drafts Mailbox, Sent Mailbox, or Deleted Mailbox.

If you store messages on iPhone and iPod touch, you can see them even when iPhone and iPod touch isn't connected to the Internet.

To set when deleted messages are removed permanently from iPhone and iPod touch, tap Advanced and tap Remove, then choose a time: Never, or after one day, one week, or one month.

To adjust email server settings, tap Host Name, User Name, or Password under Incoming Mail Server or Outgoing Mail Server.

Ask your network administrator or Internet service provider for the correct settings.

To adjust SSL and password settings, tap Advanced. Ask your network administrator or Internet service provider for the correct settings.

Delete an email account
From the Home screen choose Settings > Mail, tap an account, then scroll down and tap Delete Account.

Tip: Deleting an email account from iPhone and iPod touch doesn't delete it from your computer.

Setting up VPN:

VPNs (virtual private networks) are often used within organizations to allow you to communicate private information securely over a non-private network. You may need to configure VPN, for example, to access your work email on iPhone or iPod touch.

iPhone or iPod touch devices with iPhone 2.0 software or later can connect to VPNs that use the L2TP, PPTP or Cisco IPSec VPN protocols. VPN works over both Wi-Fi and cellular data network connections.

For basic information on how to configure iPhone or iPod touch to use VPN, see "Chapter 8: Settings" in the iPhone User's Guide. To learn how iPhone integrates seamlessly into enterprise environments, see the deployment scenarios and device configuration overview here.

Configure VPN:
Choose General > Network > VPN and then choose Add VPN Configuration. Ask your network administrator which settings to use. In most cases, if you've set up a similar VPN on your computer, you can use the same VPN settings for iPhone or iPod touch.*

Turn VPN on or off:
Once you've created a VPN configuration, the VPN switch at the top of the VPN Configurations list can be used to turn VPN on or off.

Choose your desired VPN configuration and tap or slide the switch to turn VPN on or off.

Troubleshooting VPN:
If you see a message that says Shared Secret is missing, check with your network administrator for assistance. See document HT1288, "iPhone and iPod touch: Supported protocols for VPN" for additional information.

Setting up a corporate email server for iPhone and iPod touch:

This article explains the key steps for setting up a corporate mail server which can be accessed by iPhone and iPod touch. These key steps will need to be completed by the IT support team or network administrator to enable access from iPhone to the corporate mail server.

If you have or are setting up a Microsoft Exchange server, please see the iPhone Enterprise Deployment Guide for further information regarding the required configuration of Exchange for iPhone or iPod touch access to Mail, Calendaring, and Contacts. iPhone and iPod touch, running iPhone 2.0 software or later, allow for access to Exchange servers and data via Microsoft ActiveSync and EAS.

The following information, from Microsoft's TechNet Library, may be useful when setting up or configuring Exchange servers for iPhone and iPod touch mail access:

For Exchange 2003 documentation:
technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb123755(EXCHG.65).aspx

For Exchange 2007 documentation:
technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124234(EXCHG.80).aspx

For non-Exchange mail server configurations, or for Exchange server access via IMAP, use the following settings to enable secure iPhone and iPod touch access:

Step 1
Open port 993 to allow email to be received through the firewall.

The proxy server must be set to IMAP over SSL only. SSL ensures that mail is securely encrypted during wireless transmission.

Step 2
As a best practice and for additional security protection, install a digital certificate on the server from a trusted certificate authority such as Verisign.

Installing a certificate from a certificate authority (CA) is an important step in ensuring that your proxy server is a trusted entity within your corporate infrastructure.

Step 3
Either port 587, 465, or 25 must be opened to allow email to be sent from iPhone.

Additional Information
When sending a message, iPhone automatically checks first for port 587, then 465, and then 25. Apple recommends opening 587 as the most reliable, secure port because it requires user authentication. Port 25 is considered to be the least secure because it's been around the longest and is subject to more attacks by hackers. It's also the port that some ISPs block by default to prevent unsolicited spam.

For more information about integrating iPhone in Enterprise click here.

Windows Live, Hotmail or MSN email Accounts:

Using Mail on the iPhone or iPod touch requires an account that supports POP3, IMAP, or Exchange ActiveSync. To use an MSN, Windows Live, or a Hotmail account with POP3 or IMAP mail, you'll need to upgrade that service to a Plus or Premium account.

To use Windows Live or Hotmail email accounts with the Mail app on iPhone or iPod touch upgrade to a Windows Live Hotmail Plus subscription.

To use a MSN account with the Mail app on iPhone or iPod touch, upgrade to a MSN Premium subscription.

If you don't have one of the subscriptions above, you can still check your email at mail.live.com using Safari on iPhone or iPod touch.

Creating, Editing and Adding !

Creating a Calendar event is similar to creating a contact:

From any view in Calendar, tap + to add an event.

Tap "Title Location" to enter a name and location for your event . Check these suggestions if you run into any issues using Wi-Fi with your iPod touch, original iPhone, or iPhone 3G. For best results, make sure you are using the most recent iPod touch or iPhone software. See this document for information on how to check for software updates.

Products Affected:

iPhone, iPod touch, iPhone 3G, iPod touch (2nd generation)

Resolution:
Try renewing DHCP lease at commercial hotspots

If you are having issues using a commercial (paid) Wi-Fi hotspot, like at an airport or coffee shop, try renewing your DHCP lease.

Tap Settings > Wi-Fi Networks, then tap More Info () next to the network.

In the DHCP panel, select the Renew Lease button.

If iPhone Wi-Fi connection reverts to cellular data network

If you're trying to connect to Wi-Fi and it looks like you're connected, but when you access a web page, it goes back to the cellular data network it may be due to a known issue if the wireless router is using MAC Address Filtering and the iPhone MAC address has not been entered into the filter list. This may also occur if the WEP password was entered incorrectly.

If you experience this and use WEP Password, on the iPhone tap Settings > Wi-Fi. Then tap More Info ( > ) next to the Wi-Fi network name and tap Forget this Network. Then try accessing the Wi-Fi network again. Alternatively, turn off WEP encryption on the wireless router.

If MAC Address Filtering is enabled on the wireless router, make sure the iPhone Wi-Fi address (in Settings > General > About) is entered into the router's filter. See the documentation that came with your wireless router for additional information.

Weak iPhone Wi-Fi signal:

If you are having issues using the Internet, checking email, checking stocks, or other data activity with the iPhone (the possible error message could be "could not connect to server") and the Wi-Fi icon is showing very weak signal, try turning Wi-Fi off on the device so that the device can use the cellular data network (tap Settings > Wi-Fi and the set Wi-Fi to off).

"Unable to Join Network Failure (error -3)" connecting to Wi-Fi:

If you are receiving the error message "Unable to Join Network Failure (error -3)" on the iPod touch or iPhone when attempting to connect or join to your Wi-Fi network, verify your Wi-Fi Network Name (SSID) and Security setting (WEP password, WEP hex or ASCII, WPA, or WPA2) for the device.

On the Wi-Fi Access Point/Router, you should verify if MAC address filtering is turned ON or OFF on the router, whether the security settings on the router match the iPod touch or iPhone (WEP password, WEP hex or ASCII, WPA, or WPA2), and try disabling (QoS) quality of service if that feature is turned ON for the router.

If you are still receiving the error message "Unable to Join Network Failure (error -3)" on the device when attempting to connect or join to your Wi-Fi network after trying the above suggestions, tap Settings > Wi-Fi > Other (under Choose a Network) and then enter the Wi-Fi Network Name (SSID) and select your Security setting and enter your password.

No Internet access when switching networks:

If you are switching between different Wi-Fi networks and you are unable to access the Internet on the iPhone or perform other data activities thru Wi-Fi, try turning Airplane Mode on and then off (tap Settings and turn Airplane Mode on and then turn Airplane Mode off). For iPod touch, turn Wi-Fi off and then back on again (tap Settings > Wi-Fi and turn Wi-Fi off and then turn Wi-Fi on). For a list of content that iTunes backs up, as well as more information about backups, see article HT1766: "iPhone and iPod touch: About backups."

* The "Restore from Backup..." function differs from the "Software Restore" function in that it places information from a previous iPhone or iPod touch backup onto an iPhone or iPod touch after a software restore or update transfers the backup information to a different device.

Updating your iPhone or iPod touch (General)

iTunes also has the ability to update your iPhone or iPod touch software. When you begin the process of updating your iPhone and iPod touch, iTunes performs a standard backup* (as mentioned above). To do so you would need to:

Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes installed and running before attempting to update.

Connect your iPhone or iPod touch to your computer.

Select your iPhone or iPod touch when it appears in iTunes under Devices.

Select the Summary tab.

Select the Check for Update option (as seen in the screenshot below):

* Updating your iPhone or iPod touch does not affect user content or settings.

Updating your iPhone and iPod touch to iPhone software 2.0 or later for the first time:

Software updates prior to iPhone software 2.0 updated the device without affecting your settings or media content. Updating your iPhone and iPod touch from iPhone software 1.x to 2.0 or later includes a back up, erase, and then restore of your device prior to installing the new update. iTunes will offer to create a one-time media backup of your device depending on what content is on your device and what content is stored in the iTunes Library you are connected to. You should ensure that you have enough free space on your Mac or PC to accommodate a backup that matches the capacity of your iPhone or iPod touch (4 GB, 8 GB, 16 GB, or 32 GB) if you proceed with the this backup.

As a result of this comprehensive one-time media backup, this process can take some time. The amount of time, is determined by the amount of data on the iPhone or iPod touch.

Restoring your iPhone or iPod touch

Using the Restore function for your iPhone or iPod touch is part of standard troubleshooting procedure. Restoring your device will erase all data from your iPhone or iPod touch, including songs, videos, contacts, photos, calendar information, and any other data. All iPhone or iPod touch settings are restored to their factory condition.

Whenever you restore your iPhone or iPod touch, Apple highly recommends that you perform a sync prior to restoring in order to back up any changes since your last sync. If you have movie rentals on the device, see this document before restoring.

Use the following steps to restore your iPhone or iPod touch:

Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes installed and running before attempting to update.

Connect your iPhone or iPod touch to your computer.

Select your iPhone or iPod touch when it appears in iTunes under Devices.

Select the Summary tab.

Select the Restore option.

When prompted to back up your iPhone or iPod touch's settings before restoring, select the Back Up option (as seen in the image below). If have just backed up the device, it is not necessary to create another.

Select the Restore option when iTunes prompts you (As long as you've backed up your device, you should not have to worry about restoring your phone).

Once the restore process has completed the iPhone or iPod touch restarts and displays the Apple logo while starting up:

iPhone only: For the iPhone only, after a restore, the iPhone displays the "Connect to Activate" screen. If iTunes does not have an Internet connection, you cannot complete this step.

The final step is to restore your iPhone or iPod touch from a previous backup.
